Venice Homeless & Affordable Housing Development

University of Southern California - Peter Zellner Graduate Architecture Studio

The goal for this studio was to address the housing crisis in Los Angeles through a close examination of art and its relationship to architecture. The studio also focused on community-building, specifically for the homeless community, through the lens of concepts of beauty and growth. The outcome was an artistic expression design of a new model of collective family and non-family housing solutions on a 3.15-acre lot on Sunset Avenue that was a former bus yard in Venice owned by the County of LA.

Pedestrian Perception - An Exploration of Public Space

University of Southern California - Amy Murphy Graduate Architecture Studio

The issue of density is a hot topic in Los Angeles as people continuously move to this city. As the urban center of Los Angeles exponentially densifies though, there will be two significant features of a successful city that will drop far behind if not prioritized. These two features are transportation and public space. Where do we begin to find a place that can progress the reimagining of these features? I believe that the place to start is with our local government entities. With numerous government buildings and city-owned properties located throughout Los Angeles, there is an opportunity to capitalize on the massive sites that these buildings cover. In looking at the changing modes of transportation in Los Angeles as well as the need for more public space, the Caltrans District 7 Headquarters in Downtown Los Angeles serves as a great starting point for change. How can Caltrans be reimagined in a way that maximizes public space while adapting to the rapidly changing phenomena of transportation in Los Angeles?

City College Collage

University of Southern California - Wes Jones Graduate Architecture Studio

In a city as diverse as Los Angeles and in a neighborhood, that is filled with residents who do not have the access to high quality event venues or performances, the University of Southern California has a unique opportunity to change the cultural narrative of what a “private institution” can provide. Utilizing the existing structure that is Parking Structure D and partnering with the USC Thornton School of Music, the purpose of this design is to find an efficient and welcoming way to make USC a city campus and provide the surrounding residents access to the university that is a part of their community.

This small video plaza in Expo Park aims to highlight the art and identities of the black and Latino people of South L.A. This is Placita de La Identidad.

Re-Imagining the Library

Columbia University - Leah Meisterlin UnderGraduate Architecture Studio

For this studio project, the task was to redesign Barnard College of Columbia University’s main library which was in the process of actually being redesigned by the school. In designing the new Barnard library it raised an opportunity to explore and re-imagine the university library from a contemporary perspective. In particular, by inventing new relationships between spaces of learning and social spaces; between current and new technologies; between information storage and information access; as well as between cultural, social, community, and contextual factors. This library is the academic, social, and cultural capital of the institution.
